If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
The United States of Leland isn’t a whodunit. The opening scenes of Matthew Ryan Hoge’s unusual murder mystery make it clear that Leland P. Fitzgerald (The Believer’s Ryan Gosling) is the killer. But why did he kill? Now that the deed is done, Leland is staying in a detention center. Everybody, but especially new teacher Pearl Madison (Don Cheadle), wants to know why he killed the mentally challenged brother of girlfriend Becky (Jena Malone). After all, Leland seemed to genuinely like the kid. Leland is just as confused (and can’t remember committing the act), but he reveals more and more clus as he gradually opens up to Pearl. His estranged novelist father Albert (Kevin Spacey), meanwhile, just wants to spin another bestseller out of his son’s story. Writer-director Hoge doesn’t provide any easy answers in this compelling, complicated look at teenage depression. Featuring music by the Fire Theft’s Jeremy Enigk. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Longest Day is Hollywood’s definitive D-day movie. More modern accounts such as Saving Private Ryan are more vividly realistic, but producer Darryl F. Zanuck’s epic 1962 account is the only one to attempt the daunting task of covering that fateful day from all perspectives. From the German high command and front-line officers to the French Resistance and all the key Allied participants, the screenplay by Cornelius Ryan, based on his own authoritative book, is as factually accurate as possible. The endless parade of stars (John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Sean Connery, and Richard Burton, to name a few) makes for an uneasy mix of verisimilitude and Hollywood star-power, however, and the film falls a little flat for too much of its three-hour running time. But the set-piece battles are still spectacular, and if the landings on Omaha Beach lack the graphic gore of Private Ryan they nonetheless show the sheer scale and audacity of the invasion. –Mark Walker

The Scorpions triumphantly return to the world music stage in this 85- minute concert with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Lead singer Klaus Meine is in fine form leading the band and the audience through a pastiche of the old and the new. The songs “Moment of Glory” and “We Don’t Own the World” both feature a children’s choir from Vienna, giving the show an international flavor. There are also featured appearances by Lyn Liechty (an American singer who has made a name for herself on the German stage) and Ray Wilson (who replaced Phil Collins as the lead singer for Genesis). This is a must-see for Scorpions fans. (Oddly, the cover photo depicts a scene reminiscent of MTV’s Unplugged, which does not appear in the video.) –David Martins

This seminal British television series is just as enjoyable now as when it first aired in the early 1970s. Richard, Lady Marjorie, and their son James comprise the aristocratic Bellamy family that reside upstairs while their loyal servants maintain the household from downstairs. The series follows the upper-class family’s troubles as times change and the ongoing lives of their resilient staff. Clean, clear, and presented in order, the third season’s 13 episodes follow the London household through the prewar years (1912-1914).

In these episodes, Hudson (Gordon Jackson) gives notice over James’s (Simon Williams) luncheon with his father’s typist, Miss Forrest (Meg Wynn Owen), who helps run the household after Lady Marjorie dies aboard the R.M.S. Titanic. Tensions again erupt when another family strives to hire Hudson away and Miss Forrest refuses James’s marriage proposal, afraid of a past secret. Former servant Alfred reappears, taking a hostage when Hudson discovers he is wanted for murder, and a French countess is romantically interested in Richard’s money until James exposes the truth. James’s new wife, Hazel Forrest, resolves a stock-trading scandal, but remains uneasy with her new society position, particularly while fox hunting at Lord and Lady Newbury’s country estate. A disregard for class differences nearly ends in disaster during Georgina Worsley’s (Lesley-Anne Down) holiday visit, and a casual remark by the Bellamys’ footman Edward erupts into a scandal that threatens Parliament’s Tory constituncy. Rose (Jean Marsh) almost marries an Australian sheep farmer, and James’s rocky marriage must survive Hazel’s miscarriage. In July 1914, when war looms, James looks to rejoin his regiment to escape his troubled marriage; Mrs. Bridges (Angela Baddeley) has a suitor and two servants, Edward and Daisy, defy the downstairs’ rules by falling in love. –Tara Chace

The third installment in the massively popular film series based on Capcom’s zombie horror/science fiction games, Resident Evil: Extinction brings the world to an end, not with a whimper but a bang, as Milla Jovovich’s Alice pits her bio-organic superskills against armies of the undead in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. Also on hand is a more grown-up version of the games’ Claire Redfield (played by Heroes‘ Ali Larter), who leads a convoy of humans (among them Resident Evil vets Oded Fehr and Mike Epps, who reprise their roles as Carlos and LJ, as well as newcomers Ashanti and Spencer Locke) in search of sanctuary; meanwhile, sinister Umbrella Corporation scientist Dr. Sam Isaacs (Iain Glen) seeks a cure for the zombie virus outbreak via Alice’s blood, which he taps via a lab full of clones. Subtlety has never been the Resident Evil series’ strong suit, but it’s hard to argu against Extinction’s breakneck pace and impressive CG special effects; director Russell Mulcahy (the Highlander series) lends a lot of verve to the proceedings, and the script by producer Paul W.S. Anderson pulls in agreeable touches from The Road Warrior and Day of the Dead. A hit during the summer of 2007, Extinction should please series devotees and action-horror fans alike; the DVD includes commentary by Mulcahy, Anderson, and co-producer Jeremy Bolt, as well as several making-of featurettes, and a glimpse at the next entry in the Resident Evil franchise, the CG-only Degeneration. – Paul Gaita
