H1N1 vaccination and judgment?
I was shocked to see how much we are judging each other about a vaccine. One poster even wrote that any parent who does not give the H1N1 vaccine to their child is a "horrible parent who doesn’t deserve to have children". Really people? Why all the judgment? As parents, it is our right to make what decision we feel is best for our own children – not everyone else’s. The media is tossing out all of these scary numbers, making us think that H1N1 is going to target and kill our children – that we’ll be lucky if they don’t end up in ICU or even worse, dead. What they aren’t throwing out there are the percentages of the deaths, how many of those deaths were related to underlying causes and how minor the fatal threat from H1N1 is in comparison to other communicable diseases. For instance, did you know that in 13 days (April 26-May 6) 31 people died of H1N1. In those same 13 days, 63,066 died of tuberculosis. More than 60,000 people died and not one headline!
As for the percentages of deaths related to H1N1? According to a review of hospital admissions to ICU and deaths from H1N1 flu in 2009, seventy five percent of deaths from H1N1 swine flu have been seen in patients with one or more underlying health conditions.
The H1N1 death rate is 0.007% to 0.045%. Of that miniscule amount 75% of those deaths were related to underlying causes. Can you see how small the odds are of an otherwise normally healthy person dying of H1N1? You’re not seeing that plastered all over the news either.
Another comparison?
The H1N1 death rate is 0.007% to 0.045% Seasonal flu death rate? 0.1%. Yep. As small as that number is, you still have a higher chance of dying from the seasonal flu than you do H1N1. Again, no one is telling us this. And again, the vast majority of deaths related to the seasonal flu are also related to underlying health problems. Meaning these people already had health issues, the flu just exaggerated the symptoms, making it deadly.
And here is one more thing for you. Here are the symptoms of H1N1:
fatigue
fever
chills
coughing
sneezing
sore throat
muscle aches
some also have diarrhea or vomiting
Now here are the side effects from the H1N1 vaccine:
runny nose, nasal congestion or cough
headache
muscle aches
fever
wheezing
tiredness/weakness
chills
abdominal pain or occaisional vomiting or diarrhea
Not much difference, huh? As you can see, there are plenty of reasons for parents to decide to forgo the vaccine. My question to you is why can’t we set our judgment aside?
And this does not include the dangers parents may feel as to the small amount of testing the vaccine has gone through or the concerns about the ingredients in the vaccine.
There is always a risk, even with the vaccine. There is still a small chance that you could catch H1N1 even though you’re vaccinated. There is also a risk of a severe allergic (including death) to the vaccine as well as a risk of getting Guillain-Barre syndrome. While the death risk is still lower than that of H1N1, the risk is still there.
ADORING MY 4: I’m glad this eased some of your stress. I didn’t write this to change people’s minds, I’m not against those that want the vaccination. I simply was getting tired of the media scaring everyone to death. We need to be told ALL of the facts, not just the ones that will scare us. I hope you’re family is feeling better soon – and that you don’t catch it! Congrats on the pregnancy.
OME:
"Majority of the deaths from your statistics are people from 3rd world countries."
This is true, the statistics covered the entire world, not just the U.S. However, that still goes to show how rare death from H1N1 is if the majority of the deaths are in 3rd world countries. My point was that we are letting the media scare us into believing that H1N1 is a deadly disease and that we should avoid it at all costs. Obviously, no one wants to get sick, but for the vast majority of us, it will be just like any other flu. There is no reason to panic.
First I need to thank you for writing this, you have single handily just taken a 1000 pound weight off my shoulders as I was reading this.
You have not changed my mind about getting my children the vaccine as soon as I can, it is not out in our area yet, but your statistics have made me breath again.
I am 30.2 weeks pregnant with our 5th baby… my 7 year old tested positive for H1N1 on Monday… he is doing much better but I was put on Tamiflu as a precaution. Being in my 3rd trimester and having gestational diabetes really I couldn’t chance it not to take it, although I have many apprehensions. Today my 1 yr. old came down with a 101.8 fever… I was praying it was leaving our house, but not yet.
It has been very stressful, and today I totally lost it, telling my husband to up my life insurance… I know the chances are low, but your post made me truly feel better… so thank you!

Thank you for posting this. Exactly how I feel. I am not going to have my daughter get the vaccine. It was only tested on 500 people…not enough for me.

yes but with the vaccine your child doesn’t have a chance of dying it’s up to you to vaccinate your child people don’t like to vaccinate then be running to the hospital

H1N1 is a huge issue because the media tells us it is. Everyone is going insane over it, and frankly its getting really old.
If you don’t want your vaccinated kids exposed to non-vaccinated kids, homeschool your kids. You can’t force people to try a new, untested vaccine if they don’t want to.
If you don’t want your kids to be vaccinated, don’t do it. End of story. Don’t be like the crazy mom at my local park who is telling everyone if they get the vaccine they will become a zombie. Look, I like Will Smith movies too, but I Am Legend was about a cancer vaccine, not swine flu.
If your kids get the flu, put them to bed for 3 days and feed them chicken noodle soup, orange juice, and some children’s tylenol.

Perhaps they have had a family member die or become disabled as a result of having the flu.

My doctors office isn’t even giving it out.

they are administering it in schools in my county
my friends and i were like "theres no way we’re taking this, it hasn’t been properly tested!"
we think that they are giving it in the school as a test for the vaccine and we definitely choose not to be apart of it.
even if you catch h1n1, you’ll be sick for a while, but it will go away

I don’t judge people and I think that wrong. I am parent myself. I have 7 year old and 5 year old to think about. And my 10 and half months old baby girl has well. I do want to protect my baby girl. And my boys. I am trying of ways to do that then not giving them the shot. All three of them will be getting the regular flu shot. I am making my boys wash their hands more often and I am to has well. I been wiping the carts before putting my baby girl in them. But hoping to keep her home and have my family watch her while I go to the store.
My baby girl is failure to thrive baby with feeding problems. I don’t want her getting sick no matter want. I am stay home mom. I am sterlizing my baby girl bottle more often.
Right now my boyfriend getting over the swine flu. We haven’t been around him over a month. He lived out of town and hour away from here and moving into town. He wanted to get things unpacked and ready before we came to visit. So I was lucky I was there.

Your comparison of the deaths from H1N1 to Tuberculosis is misleading to people living in industrialized countries.
Majority of the deaths from your statistics are people from 3rd world countries. Tuberculosis is a poverty disease. People over there die because they don’t have money to buy medicines. It is expensive because it requires 6mos to 1 yr of antibiotic treatment. The disease is easily spread when is left untreated.
In the US, pt’s in the hospitals who are suspected of having Tuberculosis are placed immediately on isolation precautions. Once diagnosed they are treated and people who have close contact with the person are screened for the disease. Death from Tuberculosis as the primary cause is almost non existent compared to deaths from influenza here in the US.
H1N1 aka ’swine flu’ is a new strain of flu virus that emerged in Mexico last summer. Influenza A&B has been around us for decades. Comparing the death toll from each disease and arriving to a conclusion that one is devastating than the other is inaccurate because the former is a new comer and the flu season is not over yet, it has just started. Once the flu season is over and the numbers are in, then i guess is the fair time to determine which of the two is the real killer.
One thing you are right about though is: it’s not good to pass judgement on others.
Think about this: What are the chances of of a mother and her toddler being involved in a car accident on their way to a grocery store? Probably 0.001%? well, then i suppose it’s ok not to put him in a car seat because the chance of him dying is very low anyway. And besides there’s a warning label on the car seat that says ‘death may occur from strangulation from the strap’. But what will mothers say if they see a toddler bouncing around the back of a moving car? i could imagine them saying ’she’s a moron’!
