Is it illegal for a fairground to be erected next to a house?
I woke up this morning to find that a fairground is being erected on the parkland right in front of my house and I’m not happy about it because this is a residential area and it’s literally 20 feet away from my living room window. I own my home and feel it’s unfair to have this noise and disturbance as I know from experience that I’ll have a week of idiots gathering and litter and noise pollution on my doorstep. Last time people used my driveway to park their cars and I couldn’t get in or out and I even had people knocking my door asking to use the loo! I struggled to sleep at night for the noise and they also had a generator running which kept me awake until all hours.

I live in a secluded village full of good people and the neighbours petitioned succesfully three years ago to stop this nonsense and we thought that was it but it’s appeared from nowhere today and when I spoke to the man in charge he said they have council permission and there’s nothing I can do about it being there as it’s not my land. I now have caravans blocking the view outside my front window and they’re erecting all sorts of fairground rides and I’m quite frankly disgusted, what can I do? thanks.

unfortunatly the man is correct.

Before you buy, you need to check local building codes. Never assume. Call and check. I didn’t and ended up with a paint shop across the street from me. They turned out to be great neighbors. It could have been much worse. Call the police and have their cars towed and do put up a no parking sign. Sounds like you need to talk to the city commissioners again and when they run for election, get active. I’ll bet it raises some needed $ for the city. Most quiet villages don’t have big city budgets.
towanda | Feb 07, 2010

It depends on how it is zoned. If it is zoned residental then run them out because they are violating community standards.
ROBERT | Feb 07, 2010

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do if the council have given permission. All you can do is complain and petition. Get everyone to phone up about the noise and get it measured. Take photos and video of parking, peeing in bushes, litter etc and phone the police every 5 minutes cos someones in your garden. If you make enough of a nuisance they might reconsider next year!!
lbaker2656 | Feb 07, 2010

If they have permission from the council, there isn’t anything you can do. Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing you have to put up with when you live near public land. Unless you live in a conservation area or something, where you could talk about the impact on the land, you pretty much have to put up with it for now. Once it’s gone, I would organise the local community to put pressure on the council to not allow this again in the future, and to keep doing so until they get the message.

Also, if people do park across your drive, preventing you from leaving, well that’s illegal and I would call the attention of the local authorities to this. Yes, they probably won’t do anything, but keep pestering them enough and they’ll be just as keen as you to avoid it in the future.
Kit Fang | Feb 07, 2010

I would be speaking to the local council as this is not acceptable right next to a home.

In respect to the driveway. A friend of mine had a similar experience. So he parked his car in behind them. When they returned and knocked on his door he said it is not his car. They will jut have to wait.
He has already taken photos of all the vehicles. He made the driver wait an hour before moving his car and letting him out.

Another example of this is a house In Leura, NSW Australia. It is very close to the shopping area. I happen to see the owner trying to get passed a car that was blocking his driveway. He said this happened often. If it was me I would be buying a 4 x 4 and just ramming my way out.

In your case if you have no front fence / gates, you could run rope across the front yard and driveway.
xxx000au | Feb 07, 2010

You can complain to the Environmental Health Dept at the Council about the noise and I would check that they do have permission, licenses etc. I agree it’s unacceptable.

Let’s Go to Prison (2006)

IMDB rating: 5.60

Plot: John Lyshitski is a car stealing slacker, with a weed problem, and has been in Illinois’ Rossmore State Penitentiary so many times, he knows it’s entire population of both staff and cons by their fast names. Cursed with the old ill luck of being in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in possession of the wrong car, he’s been deemed a lost cause repeat offender in the eyes of everyone else. When the heartless judge, who has been behind most of his sentences, goes to the big court house in the sky, John decides to ruin the man’s legacy by having the judge’s only offspring, Nelson Biederman IV, thrown in the slammer along with him. Here, the world-class selfish jerk learns a certain old lesson the hard way: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. But has John somewhat gone too far in the payback department?

Is "Land of the Free" becoming an outdated term?
Now, before you get your panties in a wad, let’s dispense with the "love it or leave it" claptrap, and the "more free than anyone else" horseshit.

As for the "love it or leave it", I hear that from the VERY SAME people who are bitching about SOMETHING ELSE. So save it.

As for the "more free than anyone else" . . . well, aren’t prisoners in the county jail quite a bit more free than prisoners in a SuperMax prison? Do the inmates down at the county jail slap each other on the back, and crow about how much freedom they have compared to the SuperMax inmates? No, they don’t. They are in jail and they know it. Varying degrees of imprisonment are STILL imprisonment. So, the "RELATIVE freedom" argument is just a bunch of hogwash.

Is America more, or less, free than it was 75 years ago?

Will America become more, or less, free in the future?

If you preface your answer with a big wad of Partisanship, you are among the clueless. If we lose our freedom, it is due to the complicity of BOTH Parties.

EX: That "other" EVIL Party removes a freedom, while they are in power, Once YOUR great and wonderful Party gets in power, they DO NOT repeal the freedom-removing law that that "other" EVIL Party put in place. Complicity. Get it?
EDIT: I must’ve hit pretty close to the mark to get these riled up responses. Protecting a long-held paradigm is a normal human response, but it is still VERY entertaining.

Nope.

It used to mean the People were free of government interference.

Now it means free bailouts for failed businesses.

Still the land of the free, though.
open4one | Feb 06, 2010

Freedom is a messy thing It give you the freedom to succeed or to fail It give people as you the freedom to spew your nonsense The ones that suceed would of course love America and the ones that are failures…..well… post on yahoo this bucket of warm spit
RayHere | Feb 06, 2010

The average person is less free. It is not because of laws, it is because of economics.

Our country has become so profit driven, you must have money to be free. If you have money you never need to fear job loss or loss of health care. If you have money you know you will not suffer or die from a disease that can easily be treated…if you have money.

If you have money, you won’t lose your home, or car. You can sue if someone harms you or your family.

To me being free means that you can save and invest for retirement and not worry that you will lose everything because some Wall Street hot shot goes on a gambling spree with credit default swaps. And if disaster hits, you can count on community and yes, government to help you.

There is another definition of freedom which is; freedom is another word for nothing left to lose. I guess in that respect we have more freedom than ever. There are lots of really free people and families living under bridges and sleeping in homeless shelters all over the country,

So take your pick.
J M | Feb 06, 2010

In a nut shell, The more power a people relinquish to the Government the less freedom they have.
HOOK | Feb 06, 2010

We are, without question, less free today than was intended by the framers or than was true less than 100 years ago. The federal gov. has been legislating, bit by bit, over the rights of state law during the 20th century; ‘aggressively and progressively’. States have been legislating away individual freedoms as have cities and counties. It is not the "fault" of one Party or another, it is the fault of all three divisions of government and the fault of ‘we’ the people. Only recently have we, the people, had the tools to know what our government is doing before it is done. But is it too late to regain our freedoms?
I would speak further on the subject, but your question’s limitations have taken away my freedom to continue.

I finally finish with all the comments/advice/ and suggestions.
I’m going to tell him tomorrow.

Readvised:
JayR, SO… you remember that night that I was crying cuz of that "girly feeling" that I had.I had this feeling and wasn’t sure about it. Had to urge to tell you. I think that I’ve fallen in love with you, but I’m not sure that you feel the same. I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea, and think im clingy or something. I cried cuz i thought that telling you would mess things up between us. I know you have a girlfriend and don’t live in the same town but that should neva stop us from being friends. we’re great friends and no matter how you feel or even if you’re completely freaked out by this… I don’t want to loose that friendship or (more importantly) you.And if you are freaked out about it. I respect that.So think about it and let me know what you feel. You are always gonna be someone i care about. Cause, seriously, I think that you’re a good friend, and as a special person to me. So let me know. But I had to tell you what i needed to say.

What do you think of this poem I made? What do you think it is about too?
Night, the thief of light, leaves only the moon and star-spattered sky for the travelers of darkness. Like a vicious murderer, the night stabs out the sun. The silence, the blackness of the night urges the weak to give in. Sleep overcomes them. Only the strong remain, but grope for a pathway to light. Only a few will stand, but in confusion and ignorance. The night is a deceitful abode.
Actually..I kinda thought of what it would be about after I started it.. It is for school. It’s about the temptations people face and how some resist but most give in. I like the Holocaust idea better though!

Very nice, It sounds original and everything goes together and makes sense, very unique.

put it in poetic form and you have a winner!

Night
the thief of light

leaves only the moon and
star-spattered sky
for the travelers of darkness.

Like a vicious murderer
the night stabs out the sun

The silence
the blackness of night urges
the weak to give in…
sleep overcomes them

Only the strong remain
but
grope for a pathway to light.

Only a few will stand
but
in confusion and ignorance.

the Night is a deceitful abode.

*you get the idea anyway.*

I do love this, the more I read it the better it gets!

Riema | Feb 05, 2010

Very thought provoking. The meaning I get: literally, the night…figuratively, depression or suicide…or evil and sinful temptation. Hope you’ll tell us the answer!
Daisy | Feb 05, 2010

I like it. Honestly, I’m not very good at analyzing poems… or any other works for that matter. But your words seems to portray Night as an evil or temptation. Words like "thief", "vicious", and "urges the weak" gives Night a sly personality. "Grope for a pathway to light" enforces a feeling of struggle.

A common subject would be something to do with sex. Maybe it’s about the temptation of love and possibly it’s tricks to the heart. Or drugs. Travelers of darkness could be the those who dared to venture into substances.

… or it could just be about night. :P

Anyways… it sounds intriguing. Nice!

Saw (2004)

IMDB rating: 7.70

Plot: Two men wake up at opposite sides of a dirty, disused bathroom, chained by their ankles to pipes. Between them lies a dead man loosely clutching a hand-held tape player and a handgun. Each finds a tape the perfect fit for the player in their back pocket. They play the tapes. One is threatened, the other isn’t. But they have a task: One must kill the other by 6:00, or his wife and daughter will die. They find hacksaws in a toilet, and try to cut the chains, but it doesn’t work. They are the two newest victims of the Jigsaw Killer. In a flashback, we learn of Amanda, a girl who falls victim to the Jigsaw Killer. On her head is a mask, which is hooked into her lower jaw. There is a timer on it. Only one key will unlock it, and that key is in the digestive tract of her cell mate who lies paralyzed on the opposite side of the room. If she doesn’t unlock the mask in time, her lower jaw will be ripped wide open. She survives, but her cell mate doesn’t. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn of more victims, and of the nearly-successful capture of the Jigsaw Killer, who doesn’t actually kill his victims. Instead, he finds ways to make them kill either themselves, or each other, and he thinks the entire ‘game’ out perfectly, with no other ways out. Or so it would seem.

Am I reading too much into this?
My neighbour and I are quite close. He is married with two children and according to him ,,happily” but everytime I go over to his house (it doesn’t matter what time), his wife and his kids are never there. NEVER! Does this seem suspicious to you? When I say I go over, I’m talking like every other day and even when it’s night or if I stay a long time they are never there or never come home. He claims they’re all working but this just seems like a convenient excuse. No matter what time I go day or night, they are never there. I mean all of them! The last time I saw his wife was four years ago! I haven’t seen his children since the day they moved in five years ago.
Everytime I ask him where they all are, he is always replies ,,in work”. When I say ,again?” or try and get more information out of him he just changes the subject.

Does this seem odd to you? Am I reading too much into this?

Is this what "progressive" means?
What is this newfangled "progressive" idea that we’re hearing so much about recently?

Is this it:

You don’t have to work. If you can’t work, or if you don’t feel like it, then you should be allowed to get everything for free. If a student doesn’t feel like studying or doing her homework, the teacher should just give her a passing grade for free. If too many students fail in a teacher’s class, it must be a "bad teacher." It’s the teacher’s job to make students WANT to do their homework and study. If for any reason a student just doesn’t feel like working, then it’s the teacher’s fault.

You should be allowed to escape from the bad effects of your actions. If you break the law, you shouldn’t really have to go to jail. If you just look the judge straight in the eye and say "I’m REALLY sorry, I swear to God," then you should just be forgiven. If a girl gets pregnant, as if that just happens by magic while she’s studying and doing her homework, then she sould be allowed to get an abortion.

You should be willing to sacrifice your freedoms in exchange for all of this. You weren’t planning to own a gun anyway, so what do you need freedoms for? But they should defiinitely legalize marijuana, that’s just like the Prohibition, and history shows that didn’t work. And lower the drinking age, too, but definitely take away people’s guns, because there are just some freedoms you shouldn’t want.

Does that pretty well sum up what "progressive" means?

progressives are like parasites.they latch on to their hosts and feed off of them.but eventually the host dies.

The progressives have been around since the early 1900’s , Wilson was a progressive as was Teddy Roosevelt , Hoover , FDR , LBJ, Carter and now Obama. In fact the very word progressive was so scorned after the policies and tactics of Wilson that the progressives had to find a hole to hide in . That hole was the term liberal that they conveniently stole and wrapped themselves in as a disguise . Do not confuse a liberal with a progressive they are not one and the same .

"If you break the law, you shouldn’t really have to go to jail. If you just look the judge straight in the eye and say "I’m REALLY sorry, I swear to God," then you should just be forgiven" – that’s Christianity not Progressivism

"You should be willing to sacrifice your freedoms in exchange for all of this." – that’s the patriot act.

"If a girl gets pregnant, as if that just happens by magic while she’s studying and doing her homework," – it only happens by magic if have been taught abstinence only sex-ed.

"But they should defiinitely legalize marijuana," – That’s libertarianism.

"If too many students fail in a teacher’s class, it must be a "bad teacher." – duh

To me being a progressive is facing facts as they lay, not how you wish them to be.

Where do you get the notion that democrats or progressives desire a free lunch and shouldn’t stand accountable for their actions? It’s sick what BS is being spoon fed to America’s village idiots.

Pre Roe v. Wade, authorities never pulled dead or mangled rich women from back allies. It was the poor that suffered. Why are you conservatives so heartless? The party of the rich (republican) could care less if R v. W is overturned. They’ll have their doctors do it anyway like in the old days. We all need to wake up and smell the coffee. They use the issue to stir our emotions in order to sucker us for our votes.

Nobody is trying to take guns away. Hand guns are the second leading cause of death among you men in this country. What do you think should be done about it? Forget the answer. You conservatives could heartlessly care less.

Marijuana tends to make people stupid and make stupid people even more so. This progressive, along with others, actively seek to keep marijuana illegal.

Please try to think more progressively.

Why the thumbs down? Can’t face facts as they lay?

Naturally, since your premise is flawed, your conclusion is flawed…basic logic interruptus. It never ceases to amaze me how ridiculous a conservative sounds in a blatant and ill-concealed attempt to attack liberal ideology. I would argue that you are espousing ingrained propoganda but you are doing it so poorly that I wonder if true conservatives with honest heart-felt convictions will even bother to jump to your defense?

The progressive movement is a modified form of Marxism. It has been in American politics since around 1900 and had a great deal of influence in American politics up to the mid 1930’s. As the people started to realize the direction being sought by the progressives, they lost favor with the voters. This is when the liberal movement came into being. Co opting the term and applying a milder form of progressive ideas, they came into favor filling the vacuum left by the progressive movement. The progressive movement started to resurface in the 1960’s but started to quietly infiltrate both of the parties. A slow move to the left in both parties started and by the new century had brought the Republicans to the liberal side and the Democrats back to the progressive movement. This is where Obama came in along with progressive in Congress. The movement is in strong force and has in the last year start the nationalization of our financial system and manufacturing sector. Meanwhile bringing fiscal chaos on our entire economy, end result will be total control over both the economy ans well as society.
