Why clothes shops don't understand that size 16 girls exist too?
I just went to Topshop.
I was looking for a dress to wear for my parents wedding anniversary.
I spotted a nice dress, that I loved. I looked for my size, 16.
The bigger size they had was a 14.
Now, I am not obese. I have a curvy body, but I’m not huge.
I asked the shopgirl for a size 16.
She said "well…a size 16… you now is a very rare size"
WHAT?!
It means that size 16 girls will never find a dress that fits?
That we have to accept that our size is a "rare" one?
I felt a bit like an animal on the verge of extinction.
I love my body and I’m proud of it. I asked the shopgirl to call other shops.
Size 16 was impossible to find. Damn.
I really loved that dress. And I wanted to wear it.
So (and I feel so ashamed to admit it) I bought it.
I thought "Ok, the anniversary is in September, I still have time to drop a few pounds."
On my way back home I felt so angry with myself.
Why did I accept this compromise? I mean, a dress should fit the person. Not the other way around.
Why I have to transform my body in order to fit into a dress?
Probably beacuse my size is oh, so rare and so hard to find.
Why clothes shops don’t understand that size 16 girls exist too?

it’s not that a size 16 doesn’t exist it’s that they cater to a different body type and size if it didn’t fit don’t buy it go to torrid or something to find a cute dress. they know what a size 16 is and yes you are curvy not fat but that is still a plus size outfit so you need to probably shop at plus size stores you just aren’t going to the right place.

:] i wear a size 16 too because my butt is so big! haha. im actually in the process of trying to lose weight to fit into a size 14; not because i cant find clothes that dont fit (trust me i do not have a problem with that! just look at my closet!) but i think i would be happier a size smaller. maybe you just need to shop at different stores. it’s not a lost cause; believe me. && of course love yourself && be confident && everything will work.

happily in love.<3 | Aug 09, 2009

Oh, in the city nearest to where I live, which is Exeter, all of the clothes rails I look on seem to only ever have 14, 16 or 18! I find it hard to find size 10 or 12. Maybe all the tens and twelves here have been swapped with all the sixteens where you are and that is why neither of us can find what we want?

The average size in the UK is now a 16. The girl at the shop simply doesn’t know what she’s talking about at all. The majority of girls who buy a lot of clothes tend to be fairly skinny though(cause and effect: no nice clothes for 16+, so they sell a lot of smaller sizes)
I’d rather be a curvy lady than a stick insect!

Ok I just typed out a fairly long answer TWICE and the net broke so I lost it both times so I’m just gonna write the main point to my argument which is I don’t understand why they don’t cater more to women that are size 16 or there abouts because I thought the average size of women in the UK was around a 16? Clearly fashion stores, not just Topshop are shooting themselves in the foot because they’re missing out on a lot of potential business! It also annoys me how all stores have different sizes like a 10 in one shop is an 8 in another shop and a 14 in another one! What’s that about?

Most stores cater to smaller sized ladies. They don’t tend to stock larger sizes as they have a harder time selling them. If you really like the dress, and you know that the store does carry size 16s, go to their online shop and order it in the size that fits you.
There are other shops that specifically target larger sizes and have some really beautiful clothes. Lane Bryant comes to mind, you might want to check there, if you have no luck with the store.
