Where did Andrew Johnson Die?
Andrew Johnson died on July 31, 1875 near Elizabethtown, TN. Did he die in a house? Is the house still there, and can you tour it and see the deathbed?
Andrew Johnson was among the victims of the cholera epidemic of 1873. He survived it but never recovered completely. On July 28, 1875, he visited his daughter Mrs. Mary Brown near Carter’s Station in Carter County. After lunch, about 4pm, while talking with his granddaughter, he collapsed from a stroke and was left paralyzed on one side. Regaining consciousness, he ordered that no doctor or minister be called. The next day, he suffered a second stroke. He lingered two more days before expiring. At his request his body was wrapped in an American flag, his head rested on a copy of the Constitution. On August 2, he lay in state at the Greeneville court house. The casket was closed because the body had begun to decompose. Following Masonic funeral services on August 3 he was buried on land he owned outside Greeneville at a spot he had marked with a willow tree, taken as a shoot from a tree grown at Napoleon’s tomb on St. Helena.
